States have a constitutional mandate to provide people in prison with necessary health care. As a result prisons typically provide on-site primary care and basic outpatient services. Departments of corrections usually arrange for some prisons within their system to house specialized healthcare clinics or inpatient units. With this care comes the need for Medical Waste and Hazardous Waste services. It is imperative that your Medical Waste and Hazardous Waste partner works closely with your staff to remove these waste streams, without exposing the facility to other potential risks, such as drug or needle diversion or any potential for elopement by an inmate.

  • Consultative approach: Medical Systems works closely with your staff to identify all medical waste and hazardous waste streams, and then develops a program that will allow us to safely remove these waste streams from the correctional facility, with as little risk of diversion or prisoner elopement as possible.
  • Regulated Medical Waste or Red Bag waste: The EPA defines regulated medical waste as “healthcare waste that may be contaminated by blood, body fluids or other potentially infectious materials”.   Medical System’s Regulated Medical Waste disposal program is designed to offer a wide variety of container sizes and service schedules to meet each correctional facility’s needs. We will work with your staff to make sure what should and what should not be considered Regulated Medical Waste, to reduce over classification and increased cost. Learn More…
  • Sharps Containers: Medical Systems’ reusable sharps containers have been proven to reduce needle sticks by as much as 30%. Not all reusable sharps containers are created equal. After the first goal of reducing needle sticks, the second goal in a correctional  healthcare setting must be to avoid diversion of any needles or syringes. Make sure the containers you use will not only meet your internal needs but are designed with safety and environmental impact in mind. Unlike most reusable sharps container programs Medical Systems’ program is available to most Correctional facilities. Whether you use our reusable or disposable sharps containers is a matter of your needs and goals. Medical Systems’ Sharps Waste disposal program is designed to offer a wide variety of container sizes and service schedules to meet your facility’s needs. Learn More…
  • Pharmaceutical Waste: Understanding all the EPA, DOT, FDA and DEA regulations surrounding the disposal of unneeded or expired medications takes a lot of time. Developing a comprehensive pharmaceutical waste segregation program for your prison requires a solid partner in the pharmaceutical waste and hazardous waste field. Is your facility set up to avoid diversion of controlled substance waste? Should you commingle non-hazardous,  P, U and D listed pharmaceutical waste or should you segregate them? Medical Systems will work with you and our pharmacy consultant to determine the best course for your facility and then help you execute that plan. Learn More…
  • Chemotherapy Waste: If your prison hospital is delivering chemotherapy to inmates, having a solid chemotherapy waste management program in place is critical. Trace Chemo or Bulk Chemo Medical Systems handles both but determining the most cost-effective way to manage these waste streams requires understanding the options available. We will work with your team to review each option and determine the right fit for your hospital. Learn More…
  • Compliance Training: Making sure your staff members receive the proper, OSHA, HIPPA, DOT and Bloodborne Pathogen training is critical to your facility remaining compliant. Medical Systems’ compliance training is designed to make staying up to date with current regulations as simple as possible. We will work with you to determine what staff members need what training and then set up a system to make sure initial and reoccurring training is completed by each member of your organization.
